Thursday July 15, 1999: Running on Empty

Since we could not sleep, getting up at 3:00AM was not as great a hardship as it might have been.
Us is Kathryn, Paige (8yrs), Rose (6yrs), Beth (3yrs) and me (age intentionally undisclosed).

Our neighbor Richard Marques drove us to the airport so that we could start our journey at 4:00AM. At times like this you find who your real friends are.

Long wait in Austin airport... and Memphis... and Detroit.

My aunt Mary and cousin Diane and her daughter meet us in Detroit. They where kind enough to waited with us for 4 hours and entertain our children.

Friday July 16, 1999: China at last.

Best hotel of the entire trip. Palace Museum, The Great Wall, Friendship store (our first of many), Pearl factory, and Heat Exhaustion.

That about sums up our first full day in China.

The excitement level is very high. We can not think of anything but the Mu Ying waiting for us in Nan Chang.

Saturday July 17, 1999: Site Seeing….

Tienimian Square and more shopping opportunities.

Sunday July 18, 1999: Nan Chang and Mu Ying

Beijing airport chasing our flight from gate to gate.

Late departure from Beijing, get used to late departures. Waited 90 minutes on the tarmac in 40C.

Flight arrives late at the Nan Chang airport. The airport is very small and bordered by fields. One old jet liner remains on the runway to greet us on what will be several more visits to this airport.

We arrive at the airport at sunset. We meet Mary, our guide. Mary is very sweet, and kind. We take a small bus to the Gloria Hotel (a nice hotel located in the city) where Mary tells us that we are to meet our children. This is an unexpected bit of good news.

We find Mu Ying a short distance from the other children several people are with her.

Monday July 19, 1999: Honeymoon Starts…

Mu Ying seems to fit in and accept us. Things are not great but this is better than expected.

The Day ends with Mu Ying crying to go home.
